Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio has been part of the Fitzroy Valley community since the late 1980s.

Back then, local elders and community members saw the rise of new media technology and decided it was time to create something of their own – a radio station to serve the people of Fitzroy Crossing and the wider Fitzroy Valley.

The journey began at the Karrayilli Adult Education Centre, where the community came together to make this dream a reality. They travelled across Australia, lobbying for a station that would share stories, keep languages alive, pass on culture, and bring news and music to the people. By the late ’80s, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio was born.

In the early days, Wangki was just a small segment on the ABC Kimberley. They’d switch over to “old man NP” for a few hours before going back to the ABC broadcast. But in early 1990’s, everything changed. Wangki Radio became an incorporated organisation, secured its own AM license, and began broadcasting fulltime on 936 AM.

More than 30 years later, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio is stronger than ever. We broadcast to over 40 communities across the Fitzroy Valley and connect with listeners regionally and nationally online and through social media.

Wangki is run by local staff, making it a station for the people of the Valley, by the people of the Valley. We bring our listeners a mix of music – supporting local Kimbrely and indigenous music as a priority but also mixing in, country, rock, and reggae with the latest hits. Creating a unique and eclectic mix you won’t hear anywhere else in Australia.

Our team also delivers the latest news, weather, information, and sports, both local and national.

We’re proud to serve the Fitzroy Valley and to keep our culture, stories, and voices alive!
